This year will be the most demanding for global security since 1962, when the world was stunned by the Cuban crisis, announced Neven Cvetićanin, president of the Belgrade Forum for Strategic Studies, last year. In addition to correctly announcing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he was also right in mentioning the nuclear threat, as the two superpowers raised nuclear preparedness to such a high level for the first time since 1962.

During the war in Ukraine, security experts in the Western Balkans are most concerned that instability could spill over from eastern Europe to the south-eastern threshold of the European Union.
